Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comment form, along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string, both of which help with spam detection.
An anonymised string created from your email address — also called a hash — may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you use it. The Gravatar privacy policy is at automattic.com/privacy. Once your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public alongside it.
Media
If you upload images to the website, avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) in them. Visitors to the website can download those images and extract any location data they carry.
Cookies
Cookies are small files saved in your browser. This site uses them in four ways.
Leaving a comment. You may opt in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies, so you do not have to fill them in again next time. These last one year.
Visiting the login page. A temporary cookie is set to check whether your browser accepts cookies. It holds no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
Logging in. Several cookies save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last two days and screen option cookies last a year. Choosing Remember Me extends the login to two weeks. Logging out removes them.
Editing or publishing an article. One more cookie is saved. It contains no personal data and simply records the post ID of the article you edited. It expires after one day.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content such as videos, images or articles from elsewhere. Embedded content from another website behaves exactly as though you had visited that website yourself.
Those websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking and monitor your interaction with the embedded content — including tracking that interaction if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
Who we share your data with
If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are kept indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically, instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users who register on the website, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit or delete their personal information at any time, except that they cannot change their username. Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
